Presidents Message Summer 2010
Having problems reading those colonial records?
Colonial Records are gold mines of information, especially for those of us lucky enough to have ancestors who arrived in the 1600’s and 1700’s. But, sometimes the information is right in front of us and reading it can cause us to throw up our hands and move onto something more easily read, leaving those nuggets uncovered. If you are in this group, then you need to visit this website:
http://paleo.anglo-norman.org By clicking on the “Henry VIII early groat for early-modern paleography coin”, you will be taken to the home page. From the tabs on the left click on “The Alphabet” this will show you examples of early writings in three forms. Those double “s”, “f” and “p” can change the meaning of a word. If you find yourself transcribing a colonial document, keep this website in mind, it will make your work a lot easier.
I’m wishing you the best in your summer research. I look forward to hearing about those crumbling brick wall in September. I also want to wish the new officers the best of luck for the 2010 – 2011 year.
Thanks to everyone who helped make my experience as President of your Society so enjoyable.
